Limiting your search results

You can limit your search results while doing an Advanced or Power search, or after your search results have been displayed. Limits let you exclude or include only certain items in your search results. For example, if you have too many titles in your search results after doing an Advanced or Power search, you can shorten the list by applying limits. You can choose from any pre-defined limits (such as video, CD, publication date, or author), or define your own limits to display your results.

Note:  Limits do not apply to Z39.50 broadcast searches.

To limit your search results

  1. Do an Advanced or Power search for the item that you want.

Tip:  If you want to, you can choose limits when you enter search criteria for an Advanced or Power search. Choose the limit(s) that you want to use before doing the search.

  • To use a predefined limit, choose the limit(s) that you want to use from the Limits drop-down list before doing the search. You can choose multiple limits by holding down the CTRL key and clicking each limit that you want to use

  • To define your own limits, choose a limit type and operator, then enter the limiting value in the text field. You can limit by multiple criteria by choosing another limit type and operator, then entering the limit value in the text field.

  1. At the summary list of titles, find the Limits and Sorts group.

  1. Choose the limit that you want from the list of limits.

  2. Click Go.

The library portal returns a list of search results based on the limit you chose.

Note:  This feature may not be available, depending on how your library sets up the portal.
